The Requirements

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a good fit for the Director Engineering opportunity, you will have:

  • A bachelor's degree in a technical field; a master's is preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience managing multiple engineering functions in the transportation industry (automotive, heavy truck, aerospace).
  • Experience in all the following: sensors, embedded electronics, embedded software, electrical machines such as brushed and brushless DC motors.
  • Experience delivering to major OEM customers is strongly preferred.

The Role

Reporting to the Vice President, Engineering and R&D, you will be responsible for:

  • Global execution of the sensor product line and software & electronics, which are core enabling technologies that are used by the various other product lines for application in their end products.
  • Technology roadmaps for sensors, embedded electronics hardware, embedded software, and systems.
  • Providing leadership across these engineering functions in the global product development team within the Sensors and Mechatronics Business Unit (SMBU).
  • Coordinating the creation, development, design and launch of the technology aspects for all SBU product lines. You'll work with other business functions to deliver products at the right price, at the right time with a zero-defect mindset.

More about the Requirements

In addition to the qualifications described under The Requirements tab, you will need:

  • Experience working with ASIC suppliers to evaluate their latest technology offerings as well as specific desired functions
  • A demonstrated ability to lead and supervise cross-functional teams in globally resourced teams
  • Experience in product development and validation for high volume applications such as automotive, ground transportation, or aerospace
  • Experience with automotive electronics components
  • Experience with embedded software development and validation process and tools
  • Experience with the design and application of BLDC electrical actuators
  • Working knowledge and understanding of CAD/CAE, FEA, FMEA, DFMA, lean methodologies, product development V model, ISO 26262, TS16949, DOE, MSWord, MS Excel, Visio, and MS Project are beneficial
  • Self-motivation and a proactive, results orientation, with outstanding planning and follow up skills
  • The ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects/tasks
  • The ability to lead effective communication internally as well as with CTS customers and suppliers

You also will need to be willing and able to travel, sometimes internationally, about 25% of the time. This will include traveling between Elkhart and Lisle two to three times a month. You'll also travel to Guangdon Province, China (once it is safe) one or two times a year.

 

More about the Role

In addition to the responsibilities described under The Role tab, you will lead a team that includes a manager over systems, electronics, engineering software and production test software; a manager over sensors; and a few senior level technical staff engineers. More specifically, you will:

  • Serve as primary CTS external technical interface for Sensors and Core Competency Centers of expertise in evaluating new technologies, analytical tools, supply base offerings, industry and market trends.
  • Serve as primary CTS internal technical interface for the defined technology areas.
  • Assume managerial oversight of globally distributed Core Competency Center.
  • Maintain/Update sensor and core competency technology roadmaps.
  • Provide guidance and technical input to sensors, pedals, and mechatronics product roadmaps.
  • Define and execute product plans including budget, timing, and resources in support of technology, product, and SBU strategic initiatives.
  • Provide career development for direct resources. Ensure that necessary skills are available to execute product development activities. Develop individuals’ skills and competencies by planning effective developmental activities related to current and future assignments.
  • Operate departments within approved budget/forecast. Recommend actions to adjust forecasted spending based on changes in market conditions.
  • Provide guidance for electronics hardware and electric machine manufacturing process technology.
  • Coordinate activities with Sales, Purchasing, Supplier Development, Supplier Quality, and Operations to execute new programs as well as support activities related to current production products.
  • Continuously improve the product development process in areas of direct ownership
  • Perform special assignments as necessary
