Job/Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Single Crystal Technology, the Crystal Growth Engineer leads the effort to introduce new Pb-based single crystal product offerings to market across all single crystal product lines. The engineer will fill gaps in current process capabilities by researching alternative innovative approaches, identifying promising alternatives, and developing the best-fit technology into a robust manufacturing process.

  • Develop new/improved crystal growth techniques and transfer the growth techniques to manufacturing in a rapid, efficient, and quality manner.
  • Develop new crystal compositions with improved properties.
  • Provide direction to engineers and technicians in problem solving activities. Work closely with colleagues in the department and in manufacturing.
  • Capable of conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively through verbal and written communications.


Some travel may be required to foreign and domestic locations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop new/improved crystal growth techniques and bring to full manufacturing. Work individually and /or as leader of a team to develop new crystal growth processes. Work closely with the manufacturing team to transfer the growth technique to mfg.
  • Develop single crystals of improved piezoelectric and dielectric properties by optimizing/modifying crystal compositions. Tasks include but not limited to high PIN crystals, crystals with more stable and improved properties, and crystals with high mechanical quality factor. Transfer new crystal compositions to manufacturing.
  • Participate in production crystal growth discussion, improve crystal growth process, and resolve issues encountered in production.
  • Address shortfalls in products, materials, and processes through development of creative and innovative approaches. File disclosures for potential patents and/or trade secrets.


  • BS Degree in Materials Engineering or related field required
  • MS Degree or higher in materials engineering or related field preferred
  • 3+ years of hand-on experience in crystal growth required
  • Experience in Bridgman crystal growth preferred
  • Experience in piezoelectric materials and ceramics process preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Solid understanding of crystal growth in general. Skilled in applying analytical tools and statistical techniques. Self-motivated, work efficiently and drive projects to completion. Be able to work independently and in a team environment.

Working Schedule and Environment

  • Crystal Growth Engineer must be able and willing to work at irregular hours including nights and weekends as required by the crystal growth schedule.
  • Crystal Growth Engineer may be required to spend extensive amounts of time in powder/precursor room, crystal growth area and finishing area. Exposure to controlled Pb environments.
